When war broke out in 1914, Britain had only around 700,000 trained soldiers—few compared with the mass armies on the continent. On 7 August, Secretary of State for War Lord Kitchener called for 100,000 volunteers; within eight weeks, nearly 750,000 had enlisted. The war quickly turned the old professional army into a mass army.

The story behind the motif

The First World War was one of the largest wars in world history in which more than 70 million soldiers were mobilized around the world. World War I was also the 6th deadliest conflict in world history which was largely due to the new type of weapons invented at the time.

In the aftermath of the war, major political changes came and revolutions followed in several of the participating countries.
