Canvas with August Strindberg's painting Underlandet from 1894. Until 2010, Wonderland was the most expensive Swedish painting ever sold at auction in Sweden. The work was sold in 1990 for SEK 22.6 million by the Bukowskis.

When Strindberg created the work, he had first intended to paint " a shaded forest interior, from where you can see the sea at sunset ". After painting for a while, however, he noticed that he could see no sea, but instead, in the bright middle part "an endless perspective of pink and bluish light, where airy, incorporeal, indeterminate beings float about like fairies in tows of clouds ”. Strindberg noted that the forest has become a cave and that the foreground looks like rocks covered in lichen.

August Strindberg (1849-1912) was a Swedish writer, playwright and artist. He is considered one of Sweden's most significant writers, internationally known primarily as a playwright. Several of his works are considered classics in Swedish literature.

Artist: August Strindberg | Created: 1894.
