Vasagatan next to Järnvägsparken in Stockholm around the year 1895. A stone's throw away is Stockholm's central station, which had opened 24 years earlier. In the picture we see men in plum tops and women in long dresses and straw hats.

This time was marked by enormous growth: in just 40 years, the number of inhabitants in Stockholm had more than doubled and new technology revolutionized the city. Among other things, the trams were electrified around this time. When the photograph was taken, the Östermalm district was also under construction - from being an area with barns it became the exclusive area with stone houses that we see there today.

Only about 10 years later, at the beginning of the 20th century, Sweden came to be marked by a politically turbulent time, riots and demonstrations with the labor movement's protests against the wretched working and living conditions.
