The story behind the motif

Christen Købke’s painting from 1831 is set by the bakery at Kastellet in Copenhagen, the setting where the artist grew up. From the granary loft, a tall door opens onto the rampart and the green surroundings. On the narrow wooden bridge stands Købke’s sister with her needlework, while two small figures can be glimpsed farther away.

The scene is everyday in nature, yet composed with great precision: the planks and beams of the dark loft frame the daylight, and the bridge leads the eye out toward the trees and the open space. Købke ranks among the leading painters of the Danish Golden Age and often returned to the familiar views of Kastellet. Here, the family’s workplace becomes both an intimate interior and a precisely observed townscape from 19th-century Copenhagen.

Artist: Christen Købke (1810–1848) | Created: 1831.
