The story behind the motif
Emanuel Larsen’s view from 1850 follows Copenhagen’s harbor entrance from Langelinie toward Nyholm, where the tall mast crane rises above the naval facilities. In the morning light, the water lies open before the city, while sailing ships, masts, and quays form a precise yet lively silhouette along the horizon.
Larsen was a Danish marine painter and was trained, among others, by C.W. Eckersberg. Here, a careful eye for the harbor’s vessels and buildings is combined with luminous, atmospheric painting. The broad horizontal composition, with the sky’s soft clouds and the darker ships against the water, makes the motif a fine historic harbor landscape with a distinct maritime character.
