They listen carefully for sounds from the forest. Who are they looking for? John Bauer is known for his fairy tale motifs with trolls and princesses and he has had a great influence on Swedish folklore and storytelling.
Trolls are natural beings from Norse mythology who, according to legend, are descended from ancient giants. Trolls usually live in mountains and have been described as anything from large and furry with long noses, ears and tails to being able to look like any human. Although humans have sometimes had a good exchange with the trolls as labor or advisors, they are rarely helpful and can be dangerous. According to old Old Norse writings, the first trolls appeared in the Nordics during the Viking Age. The folk belief that the forests and the inaccessible mountains were inhabited by evil creatures persisted for several hundred years. There were even laws made for trolls.
