When the Palace Park Became a Potato Field
Just a few years after this photograph was taken, the Palace Park acquired an entirely different purpose. During the First World War, parts of its lawns were ploughed up for potato cultivation – a concrete example of how a representative urban park could be transformed into farmland in times of crisis.
