The Studio Was Directly Opposite
Monet rented rooms directly across the street from the cathedral and turned the place into his temporary studio. Over nearly two years, he painted 30 canvases in the series, 28 of them centred on the west portal – an unusually sustained attempt to capture how the same stone building changes from hour to hour.

Rouen Cathedral is a French Roman Catholic cathedral, coronation and burial church of the Norman dukes and metropolitan church of Normandy. It is counted among the most beautiful and famous church buildings in France in the Gothic style.
