The Herring Net

Canvas with a painting from the 1885s depicting two fishermen on a rolling sea pulling up a net full of herring.

Winslow Homer was an American artist who primarily painted landscapes. He is best known for his maritime motifs and is considered one of the foremost artists of 20th century America.

In the early 1880s, Homer moved to a small coastal town in Maine, where he would create a series of paintings never before seen in American art. After visiting a small fishing village in England in 1882, his view of his own life and his painting changed. The paintings he would create after his visit focused almost exclusively on man's struggle against the elements of nature. Homer was fascinated by the fishermen's daily work, fishing for, among other things, herring.

Homer's painting of the two fishermen in the small rowboat shows the cooperation required to successfully raise the heavy nets and bring in the catch back to the larger ships seen in the background.

Artist: Winslow Homer (1836-1910) | Created: 1885.
