The story behind the motif

The man has a bowler hat on his head and a walking stick under his arm. He walks along some bouquinists or book stalls on the quay along the Seine in Paris.
The illustration was published in the French fashion magazine Journal des Dames et des Modes in 1913. The illustrator's name was Bernard Boutet de Monvel. He was a French artist and worked closely with, among others, the famous fashion designer Paul Poiret who was an early admirer of his work.
