When Readiness Became Everyday Life
On 9 April 1940, the situation changed overnight: Germany's attack on Denmark and Norway triggered an almost total Swedish mobilisation, including the navy being placed on alert. For the navy, neutrality meant not passivity but patrolling, escorting shipping, laying mines and sweeping them along the coasts.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the motif Swedish Navy from the 1940s. The photograph is taken of a young man looking out, dressed in his uniform. 

During the 1940s, the Swedish Navy carried out significant modernizations and adaptations to meet the growing threats in the Baltic Sea. Although Sweden remained neutral during World War II, the navy was modernized and new ship types were introduced to improve the country's defense capabilities.
