The Breakthrough Was Bought Directly
In 1885, Liljefors joined the Opponents, the artists who challenged the Royal Academy. That same year, the painting became his breakthrough: after the exhibition, it was acquired by Nationalmuseum, while Liljefors was still a young artist establishing his own way of depicting nature.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting "Duster and Fox" by the artist Bruno Liljefors from 1885. 

The painting depicts a dramatic scene where two dustmen are fighting with a fox on a patch of grass. Liljefors captures the intense struggle between the animals and uses detailed brushstrokes to bring to life the expressions of both the fox and the dogs.

Bruno Liljefors (1860-1939) was one of Sweden's most famous and prominent animal painters and a pioneer in the depiction of Nordic nature and animal life in art. His art plays an important role in Swedish art history and he has continued to influence both artists and nature lovers long after his death.
