Seattle Behind the Camera
When Anders Beer Wilse took the photograph in January 1903, he had been back in Norway for only a little over two years. He returned after sixteen years in the United States, where he had worked, among other things, as an expedition photographer and cartographer in Nevada. In Kristiania he opened his studio in May 1901—but soon sought to leave it behind.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of a wintry Norwegian landscape. Cadet Haneborg cross-country skiing behind a horse across the snow in January 1903.

Halfdan Haneborg Hansen (1868–1915) was an officer in the Norwegian army and known for his work in mapping in Norway. He played a central role in the development of geographical maps during his time.

The photographer behind the picture is Anders Beer Wilse. He was a Norwegian photographer who documented Norway in the early to mid-20th century and also worked in the United States. Wilse was born in Flekkefjord, but grew up in Kragerø and decided early on to become a sailor. After graduating from the technical school in Horten in 1882, he emigrated to the United States in 1884.

Photographer: Anders Beer Wilse | Created: 1903.
