Årets saga is a classic picture book by Elsa Beskow from 1927 that deals with the seasons with rhyming text and detailed illustrations. The book depicts how the year passes in home and nature, with verses describing each month, for example "January begins the year, February comes next, March, April has a bud in the hair". It is one of Beskow's best-known books and a popular read-aloud book for children.
In the book it says: Dear apple on apple branch, no toil you've had, just hanging and ripening happily high up there among green leaves, never having to walk to school like the rest of us. Maybe the joy won't last that long! Maybe you hit a garden path, or to your sorrow you are suddenly pushed into an apple basket! Support is thrown around each other, you and others. Apple, listen to what I tell you! Jump down to me so easily! I'll take you carefully, sure, safe in your pocket, you can then walk to school with the rest of us without any bumps.
Elsa Beskow's fairy tales and illustrations have become classics in Swedish children's literature. She is one of Sweden's most beloved authors and illustrators of all time.
