When Shells Became a Textbook
In the nineteenth century, shell plates were not merely decorative but working tools. In Thomas Wyatt’s handbook from 1838, more than 200 types were depicted and coloured directly from shells in his own collection, to make a difficult subject understandable for students. The numbering follows the same pedagogical idea.
