Steel and glass in the square
When Aron Jonason took this photograph in the 1890s, Saluhallen was still new. It had been built in 1889 in steel and glass – an ultramodern construction for its time – and was considered one of the country’s first covered market halls. At the same time, an ordinary market day at Kungstorget accommodated 650 cart spaces and 124 stalls outside the building.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an old picture of Kungstorget with Saluhallen in Gothenburg in the 1890s.

Between 1888 and 1889 the great big Saluhallen was completed and was described at the time as "the first major building in this country to be built exclusively of stone, iron and glass".

Shortly after the building was completed, a rental auction was started for the traders who wanted a place in the new market hall. Interest was huge and speculators jostled and elbowed their way through the crowds to bid on one of the 92 stalls.
