When Herbs Were Pharmacopoeia
The illustration was made not for an ordinary flora but for a medical reference work. Medical Botany gathered plants from the pharmacopoeias of London, Edinburgh and Dublin; the new edition of 1834–36 contained 185 colour plates. The image was thus part of the pharmaceutical knowledge of its time, not merely garden botany.

Rosemary is an aromatic herb that is well known for its uses in cooking, medicine and beauty. It is a member of the family Lamiaceae and is an evergreen shrub with small, needle-like leaves and blue, purple or white flowers.
