The story behind the motif
Poster with an idyllic illustration from Elsa Beskow's saga Olle's ski trip which was published for the first time in 1907.
The picture shows Olle on skis outside his home, beckoned by his mother and little sister. In the fairy tale, Olle gets a pair of skis as a Christmas present and goes into the forest, where he meets Uncle Rimfrost, who takes him on an adventure through the enchanted landscape of winter. They meet, among other things, the Snow Queen and the Ice Children. The motif captures the moment before his adventure begins, highlighting the contrast between the warmth of home and the cold winter landscape.
Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her storybooks for children that combine text and images in a unique way. She wrote and illustrated over 40 books that have become classics in Swedish children's literature. Beskow's stories are often filled with nature romance and Nordic folklore, making them timeless and beloved by generations.
