Almost Twice as Many Plates
The plate belongs to the ambitious 1927–29 project Svenska fåglar, which brought together the von Wright brothers’ bird images with text by zoologist Einar Lönnberg. The expanded edition contained 364 colour plates – almost twice as many as the first edition, published in separate parts from 1828.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage poster of a mute swan . The illustration was drawn by the von Wright brothers and published at the beginning of the 20th century in the book Swedish Birds After Nature Och På Sten Ritad. In the picture we see, among other things, the text Cygnus Olor - Latin for the name of the species .

The mute swan is a large duck bird and belongs to the heaviest birds that can fly. When a swan chooses its mate, it is for life. Both the male and the female incubate their eggs and stay by their young's side as a family throughout their upbringing.
