The Beaver That Disappeared
In 1560, Medelpad’s first provincial coat of arms was carried in Gustav Vasa’s funeral procession—with a walking black beaver. In the 1570s it was replaced because it was thought liable to be confused with Värmland’s wolverine at the time. Today’s arms are therefore the result of a heraldic identification problem.

The story behind the motif
A beautiful drawing with it heraldic coat of arms for the Medelpad region from the 19th century.

The coat of arms consists of wavy fields in the colors blue, silver (grey), and red. The wavy lines probably represent coastal and water elements, which can be linked to Medelpad's geographical location by the sea.

The text above the coat of arms reads: Medelpad Weapons. At the bottom left it says: "Sweden's National and Country Coat of Arms. Established by the Royal Majesty. After drawings by Prof. M. AD. Hildebrandt in Berlin. Published by Carl Arvid Klingspor."

Medelpad is located in central Norrland and Sundsvall is the largest and most famous city in the region, which has functioned as an important trading and industrial city. The first preserved document with the name Medelpad is from the year 1257. Medelpad is said to come from the ancient Swedish Medhal, which meant "in the middle" and Pad, which meant "path" or "waterway".
