The story behind the motif

The motif shows children looking at a magical Christmas tree. There are several different toys hanging on the Christmas tree and the children are dressed in beautiful party clothes.
The Gazette du Bon Ton in which the illustration was published was one of the most influential and exclusive fashion magazines of its time. The newspaper bore witness to the carefree and flamboyant lifestyle of the privileged circles. Fashion was art and Paris a theater stage. Gazette du Bon Ton published fashion but also satires, short stories and criticism in a style that was open to new trends.
