Plate 22 for Worth
In 1921, Barbier’s illustration was published as plate 22 in the third issue of the exclusive fashion magazine Gazette du Bon Ton. The title was linked to an evening ensemble from Worth—the fashion house that had already made Parisian couture an international business in the nineteenth century.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an illustration from a French fashion magazine in 1921. On the illustration you see the text La voie lactée: Robe et manteau pour le soir, de Worth - French for Milky Way: Dress and coat for the evening, by Worth

The illustrator's name was George Barbier and he was a very prominent artist from France celebrated by not least Vogue for his contribution to the world of fashion during the early 20th century.

Worth was one of the foremost and most influential fashion houses of the 1800s and early 1900s. The designer behind the fashion house was called Charles Frederick Worth and came from England. He is considered by many fashion historians to be the father of haute couture.
