When Fashion Was Stencilled
The plate was published as number 37 in the March 1924 issue of La Gazette du Bon Ton, where it appeared among eight special fashion images. The magazine turned fashion into graphic art: the colours were applied with pochoir, a handmade stencil technique using watercolour that gave each print an unusually meticulous finish.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a fashion illustration by Charles Martin from 1924. On the illustration you see the text La Belle de Chamonix, Jaquette Hermine et Renard Blanc, De Max-A. Leroy. A beautiful woman is skating in the popular ski resort of Chamonix in France.

The Gazette du Bon Ton in which the illustration was published was one of the most influential and exclusive fashion magazines of its time. The newspaper bore witness to the carefree and flamboyant lifestyle of the privileged circles. Fashion was art and Paris a theater stage. Gazette du Bon Ton published fashion but also satires, short stories and criticism in a style that was open to new trends.

Illustrator: Charles Martin | Created: 1924.
