The Name on the Image Conceals Hulda
The photographer credit, L. Szacinski, tells only half the story. When the image was taken in 1898, Ludwik Szacinski had been dead for four years, and his widow Hulda was running the studio at Karl Johans gate 20. Oslo Museum notes that many photographs bearing his name were in fact taken by her.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of Karl Johans gate 20 in Oslo from the year 1898.

In 1898, Norway was still in union with Sweden, but nationalism was growing and the country was approaching independence. Oslo, then called Kristiania, underwent rapid industrialization.

The image captures a time marked by both progress and tradition, where the city's residents were busy with their daily lives in the midst of a time of change.

Frame not included.

Please note that the images are cropped slightly differently depending on the size you choose. Read more about image and image quality here: FAQ.
