An Image from the Union’s Newspaper
The photograph came to the Maritime Museum as early as 1939, donated by the newspaper Sjömannen. The mounting sheet states that the image was taken from that year’s issue 7—a paper that, after the 1932 merger, became the joint voice of the Swedish Seamen’s Union for life and work at sea.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of a group of fishermen on board a fishing boat in 1939.

The boat is a classic wooden boat with a mast, which was common during that time, and the fishermen are dressed in typical work clothes. Their work mirrors coastal fishing, where traditional boats were used to catch fish using large nets.

The photograph depicts a time when fishing was still a very common and important occupation, especially on the Scandinavian coast. This type of fishing was dependent on traditional methods and work efforts, which means that this photograph documents a historical work environment and lifestyle.

Frame not included.
