The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting Alpine Climbers from 1869. In the picture we see four people climbing a snow-covered mountain, surrounded by a fantastic landscape.
The painting was made by Elijah Walton who was a British landscape architect. Walton became best known for his mountain landscapes in the Alps, similar to what we see in the painting.
Walton grew up in poverty and if he had not had the help of friends, he would not have been able to study art. After spending some years at the Birmingham Academy of Art, at the age of eighteen he became a student at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he had already exhibited a picture.
Artist: Elijah Walton | Created: 1896.
