The City’s Short-Lived Tram Venture
The tracks were laid for Kristiania’s first municipal tramway, inaugurated on 24 November 1899 between Athenæum in Akersgata and Sagene. It was the city’s first attempt to operate tram services itself—but survived only six years before being taken over by the older Kristiania Sporveisselskab.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of Akersgatan in Oslo in 1899.

The picture was taken during the work on the new tramway at Akersgata 18. On the right we see the Church of the Holy Trinity and in the background St. Olav's Church.

The year 1899 was a time of rapid development in Oslo, with new infrastructure initiatives such as the tram network changing the city's landscape and making it more accessible. This image captures a moment of modernization in a city that grew and changed rapidly.
