The fire before the jubilee
On 14 March 1923, in the middle of a rebuilding project, Central Station was badly damaged by fire. The timing could hardly have been worse: just eight weeks later, Gothenburg’s great jubilee exhibition opened, and the city was expecting large numbers of rail passengers. By then, the rebuilt concourse had just acquired its new role as a waiting hall.

The story behind the motif

A photograph of Gothenburg Central Station during the 1920s. The picture was taken from the Post House on Drottningtorget, which is now a hotel. Gothenburg Central Station was built in 1858 and is the oldest station still in operation.
