The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting Vill Vallareman by John Bauer from 1910 (English title: A Fairy Tale Shepherd ) . The herder Vill Vallareman sits on a rock late at night and plays beautiful music for his goats. In the evening sky, the stars shine over the open landscape.

The picture was published with The Tale of the Four Big Trolls and Little Vill-Vallareman by Cyrus Granér in the collection of fairy tales from Between Tomtar and Troll . A short passage from the story goes like this: " Vill Vallareman was a small troll with human features. He was a fine musician and good at playing the bark horn. It was heard all over the forest when he played. The big trolls fought over who would be next king but in the end it was Vallareman with his mediating personality who became king. You don't need to be physically big and strong to go far. Even someone small can become king. Wish Vallareman was 'big' inside."

John Bauer is known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses. He has had a major impact on Nordic folklore and storytelling.
