The story behind the motif
The poster shows a drawing of the Tullpackhuset on Skeppsbron in Stockholm, designed by architect Erik Palmstedt in 1783. The building is an example of neoclassicism, inspired by the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio and the ideals of neo-antique.
Palmstedt, who was a central figure in Swedish architecture during the 18th century, was strongly influenced by Palladio, whose work was often characterized by symmetry and classical elements such as columns and arches.
The customs house was a customs house for handling goods and is an example of a functional building that was also aesthetically pleasing. In the drawing we see the typical Palladian-inspired style with the elegant arches above the windows and the stylized entrance, reminiscent of ancient architecture.
The building is still well preserved and is part of Stockholm's historic cityscape, located at Skeppsbron, a central location in the city.
