The story behind the motif

This canvas print depicts Bruno Liljefors' famous painting The Poacher from 1887, considered one of his most prominent works. The man in the picture holds a rifle and listens intently for sounds in the forest.

During the 1880s, poaching was not uncommon, especially with the increasing demand for game meat and skins resulting from industrialization and urbanization.
