The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting Unveiling of King Karl XIV Johans Equestrian Statue 1854 .
Karl XIV Johan , born Jean Bernadotte in France in 1763, was king of Sweden and Norway from 1818, married to Désirée Clary, Queen Desideria who was the sister-in-law of Napoleon's brother Joseph Bonaparte.
Karl XIV Johan arrived in Sweden in 1810 as Prince of Ponte Corvo. The statue symbolizes his entry into Stockholm as the newly elected crown prince in the same year. The statue was originally inaugurated in 1854 at Slussen but since 2018 has been placed on Slottsbacken at Stockholm Palace.
The artist behind the work was called Bennet, his detailed works are good cultural historical documents. Industrialization and the breakthrough of steam engines in the 19th century transformed Sweden from an agricultural society to an industrial society, which came to change the urban landscape drastically with very high population growth. Much in society changed during this time, including people's living conditions, economy, rights and politics.
