The story behind the motif

In the picture, we see female workers at a brewery bottling beer and sealing the bottles with corks. In the background, a foreman can be seen supervising the work. That women worked in industry was something new at a time when Sweden began to industrialise. The work could be heavy and unhealthy, but Zorn's painting should hardly be perceived as social criticism. He seems above all to have been interested in capturing the light, the moist air and the concentrated work
Anders Zorn was a significant artist in Sweden and was also successful internationally, not least in the USA, where he was hired to paint portraits of presidents, business leaders and society.
