The story behind the motif
Poster with a picture from the first half of the 20th century of a beer courier from AB Stockholms Bryggerier carrying 50 bottles of beer on his back for delivery to stores and restaurants in Stockholm.
AB Stockholms Bryggerier was created in the 1870s as a collaboration with Hamburgerbryggeriet, Nürnbergs Bryggeri and a German financier. The goal of the collaboration was to conclude a cartel agreement in order to raise beer prices and the companies' profitability. The agreement attracted more breweries and by 1899 the consortium had achieved a monopoly in Stockholm.
The monopoly lasted right into the 1920s, until three weak-drinking breweries received permission to also produce beer. However, AB Stockholms Bryggerier would again end up in a monopoly position in the 1940s after having bought up its competitors and immediately shut down one of them. The monopoly was permanently broken when the government in the 50s changed the regulations and prohibited the formation of cartels.
