The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting Gustav II Adolf's death in the battle of Lützen from the year 1855.
The Battle of Lützen in Germany in 1632 was one of the largest battles of the Thirty Years' War. In the picture we see an enormous intensity and richness of detail between the Swedish-Protestant army under the command of King Gustav II Adolf and the Catholic-Imperial army under the command of Field Marshal Albrecht von Wallenstein.
The battle ended with a costly victory for the Swedes. Around 10,000 soldiers fell during the 10 days, including the Imperial General Gottfried zu Pappenheim and King Gustav II Adolf.
The artist behind the work is called Carl Wahlbom and was one of Sweden's most popular history painters during the 19th century.
Artist: Carl Wahlbom | Created: 1855.
