The story behind the motif
The suffragettes, (derived from Latin: suffragium) literally means "vote at election", and was an informal name for part of the movement for women's suffrage, mainly in Great Britain.
In the picture we see a number of signs and demonstrators being pulled by horse and cart during a demonstration on May 21, 1906 in England.
All over Europe, the Nordic countries and England, women actively demonstrated for equal conditions. Sweden introduced female suffrage in 1919, later than Finland (1906), Norway (1913) and Denmark (1915).
