The story behind the motif
Canvas with a painting of the beautiful Storkyrkobrinken in Stockholm in the 1860s, painted by Carl Johan Billmark. Storkyrkobrinken is a street in the Old Town that runs from Storkyrkan to Myntgatan. It is as old as the Middle Ages when it was called Sankt Nicolai port (sancte nicolauese port, 1422).
In the painting, we see a teeming folk life with people, horses and carriages in the middle of industrialization and one of Stockholm's most expansive periods ever. Several people stand and admire the statue depicting Gustaf Wasa - King of Sweden between 1523-1560.
Industrialization and the breakthrough of steam engines transformed Sweden from an agricultural society to an industrial society, which changed the urban landscape drastically with very high population growth. Much in society changed during this time, including people's living conditions, economy, rights and politics.
