When the Potatoes Arrived
June 1917 was a tense month in Gothenburg. Just weeks earlier, hunger riots had broken out after families had gone without both bread and potatoes; when the potatoes arrived in June, the worst of the crisis eased. The photograph therefore captures the harbour canal in the midst of a year when everyday provisions became high politics.
