The story behind the motif
Eugène Fredrik Jansson was a Swedish painter known for his nocturnal country and cityscapes dominated by shades of blue. Towards the end of his life, from about 1904, he painted mainly male nudes. The earlier of these phases has caused him to sometimes be called the blue-painter.
Jansson later moved to Timmermansgatan in Södermalm and in this work he depicts the stairs up to Mariaberget.
