The story behind the motif
Poster with a beautiful, vintage map of Marstrand from 1797. In the upper right corner we see the text: Charter of Marstrand and Carlstens Fortress - which is thus the area the map shows.
Carlstens Fortress consists of a round, seven-story high tower surrounded by blown-up moats and high walls with four bastions, all built of granite. Within the walls are two independent buildings from the 18th century. After the extension in the 19th century, the fortress was regarded internationally as one of Europe's strongest fortresses.
Like many other fortresses, Carlsten was used as a prison until 1854. In 1882, the fortress was removed from the permanent defense of the kingdom. Since 25 January 1935, the fortress has been a state building monument located in Marstrand.
