The story behind the motif
Canvas with a fantastic painting of the palace Makalös by Axel Fredrik Cederholm from 1825.
Makalös was the accepted name for the De la Gardieska palace, which was then located in the newly built state part of Norrmalm in the place that we today call Karl XII's square.
Makalös took 8 years to build and was completed in 1643. The palace was one of the most talked about palaces in Sweden and the private palace which at the time was the most exclusive in the whole Nordic region.
In 1680, Karl XI took over the palace through the reduction, which was a repossession of properties that the crown had previously distributed and then the palace became an arsenal.
In 1793, the building was made to be used by the Dramatic Theater and in 1825, in the middle of a performance, the palace burned to the ground in a huge fire.
