The story behind the motif
Record of a historical drawing for a lantern, a structure often used as a light opening or as a ceiling light on lighthouses, temples or large buildings. The drawing is from 1846 and comes from Sweden.
In lighthouses, lanterns were particularly important to keep the lighthouse lighting visible from great distances, especially in bad weather conditions or during the night. Therefore, lanterns were a critical part of the design to ensure that mariners could navigate their way out at sea in poorer conditions.
