The story behind the motif
Canvas with a fantastic portrait in blue tones of beautiful Carin Östberg - daughter of Sweden's, at the turn of the century, richest man and whose art collection became the basis for the Thielska gallery; Ernest Jacques Thiel. Carin was well known in Sweden, partly for her father and for her beauty. Among other things, she was married to Ragnar Östberg, the architect who designed the City Hall in Stockholm, and with him became the mother of Susanna Ramel, who in turn married the famous musician Povel Ramel.
The artist for the work was Axel Törneman and was one of the first Swedish expressionist artists. Some of his paintings are seen as the most important breakthrough works of Swedish modernism.
Artist: Axel Törneman | Created: 1916.
