The story behind the motif
Poster with the illustration "King Carl Champagne", and is a label from Max Sutaine & Cie in Reims, a champagne house founded in 1833.
The label adorns a bottle of "King Carl Champagne", and on it is an illustration of King Charles XV, who was King of Sweden and Norway between 1859 and 1872. Charles XV's portrait is surrounded by Swedish and Norwegian flags, emphasizing the ties between these two countries during his regency.
The label is from 19th century, probably around the 1860s–1870s, when champagne from prestigious houses was often marketed with royal connections to emphasize exclusivity. Max Sutaine & Cie were known to have royal authorizations and sponsors, as reflected in their use of the king's image on the label.
