The story behind the motif
Poster with a portrait of Johan III, king of Sweden from 1569 to 1592. The painting is painted by Johan Baptista van Uther - a Dutch painter who was active in Sweden.
Johan III became king of Sweden after usurping the royal power. He did this by imprisoning his brother Erik XIV in the fall of 1568 and propagating against him for the rest of that year. It is also assumed that Erik, eight years later, was murdered on Johan's orders.
During his time on the throne, Johan ended the Nordic Seven Years' War, but instead Sweden was drawn into the Nordic Twenty-Five Years' War with Russia. In the end, they managed to achieve minor achievements there. He also worked for closer relations with Poland, whose throne he managed to secure for his son and heir Sigismund.
