Before the fairy-tale forests
When John Bauer painted I skogen in 1901, he had not yet begun illustrating Bland tomtar och troll. The image belongs to his years of searching, as he gradually approached the distinctive visual world in which the forest would soon be filled with creatures of fairy tale and folklore.
