The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting King Gustav Vasa of Sweden Addressing Men from Dalarna in Mora (Swedish title: Gustav Vasa speaks to the Dalarna men in Mora) . In the painting from Mora from December 1520, Gustav Vasa urges the valley men to rebel against the Danish client Christian II who then ruled Sweden.

The valley men were less eager to rebel, and Gustav Vasa was then forced to flee towards Sälen to escape Christian II's men who were chasing him. It was a day or so before the valleymen relented and sent a number of men on skis after the fleeing Gustav Vasa to offer their support in Sälen in his rebellion against the Danish king.

Three years later, the Danish king's rule was over and Gustav Vasa was elected the new King of Sweden, and on Midsummer's Day in 1523, Gustav Vasa, who had been elected king at a Riksdag in Strängnäs, marched into the capital. He is celebrated with pomp and circumstance when he rides into the Palace in Stockholm.

The story of Gustav Vasa's escape to Sälen later became the background to today's immensely popular Vasaloppet.
