The story behind the motif
Canvas with a portrait of a king Gustav III from 1777. The beautiful painting is painted by Alexander Roslin, a Swedish portrait painter. From the 1750s, Roslin was mainly active in Paris and was elected to the French Academy of Arts.
In 1772, Gutav carried out III a coup d'état when the Riksrad was deposed and imprisoned. He took military command and Sweden's first political parties, the hats and caps, were dissolved, which also put an end to the party battles that had previously characterized Swedish domestic politics.
Through the new 1772 form of government, political power was once again divided between the king and the Riksdag. In the same year, Gustav III also abolished torture as an interrogation method, and the torture chamber Rosenkammaren was closed forever. Gustav III also enforced a restricted press freedom ordinance in 1774.
