Sandberg, born 1782, was a Swedish artist known for his historical paintings and portraits. He was part of the romantic artist movement in Sweden during the 19th century and used his art to highlight important events and figures in Swedish history.
The painting depicts an important event in Swedish history when Gustav Vasa, later known as Gustav I of Sweden, hides with farmers in Isala village during the rebellion against the Danish occupation in 1520. He hid with the farmers as part of his fight against the Danish occupation of Sweden and the then union between Denmark and Sweden, also known as the Kalmar Union.
