The story behind the motif
Poster with an atmospheric painting of Gripsholm Castle by Carl Johan Billmark from the middle of the 19th century. The motif shows the inner courtyard and people who have gathered there. Possibly it is one of the queens Maria Eleonora and Hedvig Eleonora who arrives at her widow's seat during the great power period.
Gripsholm Castle is a royal castle by Mälaren, just outside Mariefred's old town center in Strängnäs municipality. The castle has an eventful and long history that can be traced as far back as the 14th century.
